PSA: What You Didn’t Know About Private Equity in Trades

Private equity can be harmful to the skilled trades because it often prioritizes short-term profits over long-term quality and sustainability. When private equity firms acquire trade businesses—like plumbing, electrical, or HVAC companies—they may cut costs by reducing training, overworking employees, or using lower-quality materials. This can lead to a decline in craftsmanship, safety, and customer service. Additionally, these firms often raise prices while squeezing out smaller, locally owned competitors, making it harder for skilled tradespeople to thrive independently and for customers to receive honest, reliable service.
